Vol. I · Issue 01 · For evidence synthesis

Your review shouldn't feel like digital archaeology.

Systemic Review on systematic-review.app — upload your screening list, retrieve open-access full texts through legal public APIs, and export audit-ready files for EndNote. No scripts, no guesswork.

Built for Master's students, doctoral candidates, faculty, and clinician–researchers. Processing respects open-access policy and your institution's norms.

§ 1 — Method

Four steps from screening list to citation-ready archive.

STEP 01
Import your study list

Upload Covidence/EndNote export (CSV or JSON). We normalize DOIs, study numbers, and author stubs to match common file naming (e.g. 003_Author_2020.pdf).

STEP 02
Retrieve open-access PDFs

For each DOI, we query Unpaywall, then Europe PMC, then PubMed Central when a PMC ID is available. Paywalled articles are flagged for library or author follow-up — never pirate sources.

STEP 03
Align with your protocol

Record inclusion and exclusion criteria. Optional keyword hints support PDF text review — they do not replace your judgment.

STEP 04
Export and defend your methods

CSV for supervisors, EndNote-style XML for reference managers, and a download log showing which resolver succeeded for each article.

§ 2 — Sources

Open data only — reproducible by design.

This app does not scrape paywalled publisher sites or bypass login walls. We use official public APIs and open-access indexes so your methods section can name real sources.

§ 3 — Data handling

How we prepare and handle your data.

01
DOI normalization

Strips https://doi.org/ prefixes, trailing punctuation, and whitespace so lookups are consistent across export tools.

02
Filename sanitization

Removes characters unsafe on Windows/macOS (<>:"/\|?*), collapses whitespace, caps length — batch exports work on every lab machine.

03
Study ID harmonization

Covidence #3, 003, and 3 resolve to the same row for matching PDFs on disk.

04
Resolver waterfall (deterministic)

Unpaywall → Europe PMC by DOI → Europe PMC by PMC ID → clear status if no legal OA PDF exists.

05
PDF text review (optional)

Extracts text locally up to page/character limits; counts protocol keyword hits — advisory only, not automated inclusion decisions.

06
Privacy posture

We do not request, store, or process PHI or patient-identifiable data. Uploaded study lists should contain bibliographic metadata only.

§ 4 — Why scholars choose it

Built for the people who actually do the review.

I

Reclaim weeks of screen time

Stop manually opening publisher pages, checking Unpaywall one article at a time, and renaming PDFs to match your Covidence numbers. Batch retrieval with a source-labeled audit log means you spend time on appraisal — not tab archaeology.

II

Technology that stays out of your way

No terminal, no JSON editing, no "configure ingestion pipeline." Upload your list, click download, export to EndNote. Advanced options exist; they never block the first successful run.

III

Methods you can cite with confidence

Every success and failure is tied to a named open resolver (Unpaywall, Europe PMC, PMC) — supporting PRISMA transparency and supervisor sign-off without hand-waving about "an AI found the PDF."

§ 5 — From the field
I stopped maintaining a shadow spreadsheet of which PDFs I'd already tried.
PhD candidate, health sciences
Students export a log I can actually read in a methods meeting.
Faculty supervisor
Registry search and full-text retrieval in one place — finally.
